Australians love their Vegemite; the Brits lover their Marmite; Americans love their peanut butter. Back in the day, the Brits also had a meat-based spread called Bovril. In the 1870s, a Scottish butcher created a thick and salty meat paste. He originally called it “Johnston’s Fluid Beef”. I can see why it was renamed Bovril. In the late 1800s and very early 1900s, Bovril was considered a superfood. It kept a long time and had a lot of protein. During World War I, Bovril was known as the “war food.” Sometimes it was mixed with hot water to make a warm, protein-packed drink. This sign, I believe, is from the WW I era. It reads “Noel Feeling Thanks to Bovril.” “Noel” is the French way of saying “Merry Christmas.” Based on the message and the holly bordering the upper and lower part of the poster, this was an advertising poster to connect Bovril with improving the Christmas spirit. The poster is quite large, approximately 30 x 20 inches. The bottom edge is a bit rough, with a small chunk missing on the lower right part of the poster. Also, one of the middle seams has split slightly. Because the poster is so old, a previous owner affixed it to a piece of cardboard for more support to preserve it. Regardless, it’s a great advertising poster from the early 1900s.

Sorry Folks! No Shipping For sale, with 100% of all proceeds going to the Boston Bridges Initiative, a 501(c)3 here in the Boston MetroWest supporting all METCO groups Signed, original mixed media painting, “Body Energy Figure Study” November 2002 by Margie Topf Unframed: 23.5” X 18” About Artist Margie Topf: Margie J. Topf has an extensive history as a dancer, educator, choreographer and Bikram yoga teacher. In 1974 she founded the Topf Center for Dance Education in Boston, a performing modern dance company and dance school with additional dance programming in the Boston public schools. For a seven year period there was a satellite dance school at the Stone Church here in Lincoln. Margie’s programs in the Boston public schools were designed to foster interracial understanding through dance, with a signature program for five Boston high schools called “New Friends through Dance.” In 2001, Margie stepped down as Artistic Director to pursue a new career as a Bikram Yoga teacher and Reiki practitioner along with beginning to create an extensive drawing and painting collection. For a five year period, Margie studied closely with an expressive art teacher in Northampton, Lucy Mueller White, who encouraged Margie’s creative and unusual style of drawing using pastels. Margies primarily abstract and vibrant drawings include her own distinctive style, titled “windows.” Margie is delighted to support Boston Bridges Initiative and METCO while sharing her work with the community. I purchased these from an estate in Holland, MI, years ago. The Holland Rusk Co. began in the late 1800s in Holland, MI. Rusk is a dry and crunchy round biscuit—basically twice-baked bread. It’s used in a lot of recipes and as a type of toast. In the Netherlands, rusk is used as a breakfast food, something like toast. It’s also used as a type of shortcake base. These two advertising blotters were put out as a promotional item for the company. They were obviously never used based on their condition. The blotters measure 8 1/4 x 3 3/4 inches and are made of a light cardboard. We could arrange shipping if preferable.

This monthly magazine, in newsprint form, offered housewives back in the day romantic short stories, articles on managing the home, songs, poems, and dress patterns—along with some interesting ads. The magazine, published by Vickey and Hill Publishing Co. of Augusta, Maine, called itself “A Journal of Choice Literature.” It measures 13 1/2 x 11 inches. Although some of the bindings have come loose, all of the magazines have the full amount of pages. One of the magazines have torn corners on the last few pages and some have a few nicks on the borders, but all of the great graphics are in good shape. Here are the dates. —July 1923 —April 1927 (loose binding0 Special Easter Edition —June 1927 (loose binding) “Children’s Day” —Feb. 1930 (good shape) —Jan. 1933 (good shape; 32 pages) New Year’s Edition Two things stand out with these magazines the cover art (most signed by F. S. Nosworthy) and the ads (some are comical). All five magazines were addressed were addressed to a person in Watervliet, MI, and are in pretty good shape for being around a hundred years old.
